Project Manager for Defence, New Zealand

As a Project Manager at Systematic NZ, you will be part of a local team digitally enabling our customers by implementing our Command and Control solutions. Using project management methodologies, you will work closely with the Systematic team and various branches within the customer’s organisation, as well as their international and domestic partners. You will be an important driving force within our hybrid (Waterfall X Agile) environment, ensuring our projects are well planned and executed. Located at our office in Wellington CBD or onsite with our customer in Upper Hutt, you will be responsible for running the day-to-day business, together with a strong service team, and helping our Programme Manager and Business Development Manager expand our capabilities. In other words, you will ensure that all the capabilities we provide through our solutions and services are well integrated, configured, implemented, and deployed in the customer environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading Projects: Manage software delivery projects with a team of technical staff, ensuring timely delivery and quality outcomes under the guidance of the programme manager. Coordinate activities between the service delivery team, the customer, and our headquarters.
  • People Management: Oversee a small team, including hiring, developing, and managing performance.
  • IT Domain Competence: Handle complex software development projects, including embedded software or delivery of complex software projects.
  • Master Complexity: Balance and anticipate the needs of multiple stakeholders, building strong internal and external relationships.
  • Passion for Customers: Demonstrate commercial experience and a strong dedication to understanding and meeting customer needs.
  • Processes and Reporting: Manage and improve workflows and processes, generating clear, data-driven reports to support decision-making for both the customer and management.
  • Sales Collaboration: Collaborate with the Business Development Manager in sales activities, such as sales meetings, proposal writing, and ensuring technical support and materials for workshops.
  • Contract Management: Oversee the setup and running of our sustainment contract and manage a small delivery team. ITIL accreditation is required to ensure a structured and efficient approach to service delivery and support. This accreditation will be instrumental in maintaining high-quality standards as we navigate and fulfil the demands of sustainment contracts within our environment. Expect both domestic and international travel to customer sites, including regular visits to our headquarters in Aarhus.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Education: Minimum bachelor's degree in software/IT, commercial directions with an element of IT, or other relevant engineering tracks such as robotics
  • Experience: Proven experience as a project manager for software projects or service delivery of software projects, with PMI, Prince2, or IMPA certification
  • Skills:
  • Ability to manage highly complex and agile projects together with the customer, sub-contractor, and your team in a busy environment
  • Skilled in combining business insights with IT knowledge to create value for the customer
  • Outgoing, trustworthy, and able to inspire the customer, the end-user, senior management, and your team
  • Proactive and eager to make a difference
  • Ability to deliver on cost, schedule, and quality
  • High degree of flexibility in connection with your tasks.

Additional Information

  • To work within our Defence Business Unit, you will need a New Zealand security clearance. This means that you must have a clean criminal record, be a New Zealand citizen or hold a Resident class visa and have a verifiable background history assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS.   • Travel is to be expected - approx.10 days a year of domestic travel and a visit to our Headquarters in Aarhus, Denmark as part of your onboarding and other training activities.
  • Defence or military knowledge and experience are advantageous but not required. Certification and practical experience within Project Management and SCRUM are a must, ideally with 2-3 years of proven experience.
