Business Development Manager for Defence, New Zealand



As a Business Development Manager (BDM), you will be a key player in strengthening the company’s activities in bringing world-class defence command and control (C2) and interoperability solutions and services to the New Zealand market. The job
The primary focus of the position as Business Development Manager concerns business development of Systematic’s defence products and services in the New Zealand market area. This includes both short-term (tactical) and long-term (strategic) knowledge of, constructive relationships with, and insight into local customers and their plans in the marketplace as well as influential government officials and industry.


As a Business Development Manager at Director level, you will be reporting to the Group Senior Vice President (GSVP) for Defence Business Development, and your key tasks will include:

  • Achieving own sales targets and ensuring that the overall business unit sales targets are achieved 
  • Formulating and executing business strategies, which will result in comprehensive account plans that will be continuously updated in collaboration with the GSVP 
  • Maintaining a deep knowledge level of our products and service offerings and being able to communicate this clearly to all relevant stakeholders 
  • Interacting with customers, including representation at sales meetings, presentations and negotiations
  • Being responsible for keeping the GSVP, and supporting Operations teams (local and at Group), continuously and accurately informed of important activities and issues through regular and structured reporting 
  • Participating in further development of the products by providing the product/development teams with important information about the customer’s use, experiences and requirements for the products. 


Your skills and personality
The successful candidate must have the following experience and skills:

  • Operational military experience in the command and control area as a Staff Officer in Planning, Operations or Intelligence
  • A thorough knowledge of the dynamics of the defence IT market and the capability of using this to actively inspire and drive the external market communication 
  • Proven strong relations with, and network within, the armed forces of New Zealand Armed and related government agencies
  • Business management consultancy skills that will enable you to challenge the business strategy and needs of the customers.


Preferably, the candidate also has the following:

  • 3-5 years of experience in B2B sales and marketing communication in the Defence IT market in the region
  • A Bachelor's or Master’s degree in a relevant study 
  • Proven sales skills within IT solutions selling 
  • An excellent practical and theoretical approach to work with the ability to balance the two in order to deliver results that move the Systematic business forward
  • Work collaboratively with local and group colleagues to ensure our customer deliveries.

You are persuasive, cooperative and able to demonstrate a positive attitude towards internal stakeholders and customers in various situations. You are able to see the big picture and think two steps ahead. 


Your main working location will be Wellington, but the job includes travel to other customer locations around New Zealand and countries in the region.
