Senior Research Scientist – AI for C4ISR Systems

Would you like to shape how artificial intelligence supports critical military decision-making across NATO and allied forces?

As a Research Scientist at Systematic, you will explore how modern AI techniques can be integrated into operational C4ISR software to support commanders facing uncertainty, time pressure, and contested conditions. Your research will directly influence how we develop decision support capabilities in the SitaWare suite, trusted by over 50 nations worldwide.

The job
You will investigate research questions rooted in real operational challenges faced by military commanders using C4ISR systems. Working at the intersection of applied research and intelligent systems development, you will investigate and evaluate how AI methods can enhance situational understanding, planning, and decision-making in complex environments — translating research findings into prototypes and proof-of-concept implementations that inform product and platform direction. Your work will translate research insights into concrete guidance for system design and long-term product strategy for the SitaWare suite.

Your key responsibilities include:
•    Formulating and investigating applied AI research questions grounded in real system-level challenges faced by C4ISR users
•    Designing and developing experimental software solutions and prototypes that explore AI applications in realistic operational contexts
•    Building simulations and test environments to evaluate AI-enabled behaviour under assumptions about uncertainty, timing, and network degradation
•    Collaborating with academic partners, Product Management, and customers to ensure research relevance and industrial impact
•    Contributing to architectural patterns and design principles for integrating AI into mission-critical C4ISR software.

Depending on your qualifications and career ambitions, the role may be structured as an Industrial PhD, Industrial Postdoc, or senior applied research position focused on long-term system impact.

Joining the team
You will join a product organisation of approximately 14 people in Aarhus, working within the Development organisation that creates the SitaWare suite. The team includes a Product Manager who guides product expansion strategy, an Architect, developers with expertise in MLOps and data science, and system testers.

You will work closely with the Research Lead and Product Management whilst collaborating with customers and academic partners to ensure your research addresses genuine operational needs.

Leveraging advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies, SitaWare Insight automates the processing and analysis of complex, multi-source data.

This is your opportunity to see your work influence software that supports critical decisions in defence operations worldwide, from headquarters planning to tactical edge operations. The team values applied research that delivers real-world impact, combining academic rigour with practical engineering insight.

Your qualifications
•    Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field with demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and evaluating advanced software or AI-based systems
•    Strong interest in applied AI research with the ability to engage critically with state-of-the-art methods and assess their suitability for real-world systems
•    Ability to reason about software architecture, design trade-offs, and system-level consequences when integrating AI into complex or distributed systems
•    Experience building experimental prototypes or research-grade software that demonstrates technical concepts
•    Fluency in English with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse stakeholders including military professionals, engineers, and academic researchers
•    Willingness to travel occasionally for customer engagements and academic collaboration.

Please note that you must be able to present a clean criminal record and have lived in a NATO and/or an EU country for the past seven years as we work with security-classified projects. Read more here.
