Senior Data Scientist for Defence Product Lab

Creating prototypes that will have a direct influence on the product roadmap. Experimenting with cutting edge technologies. Creating high visibility in the organization. Sounds fun? Apply now!

The job

As our new Senior Data Scientist, you will drive AI innovation in Defence technology through rapid prototyping, customer engagement, and cross-functional collaboration to shape next-generation military capabilities.

In addition to that, some of your key tasks will be to:

  • Lead Defence Product Lab AI activities.
  • Translate AI technology into practical military applications with understanding of defence operational contexts or ability to rapidly acquire domain expertise.
  • Break down organizational barriers to gain acceptance for innovations while engaging senior executives and supporting sales efforts.
  • Balance technical excellence with business value through rapid prototyping, stakeholder feedback, and knowing when solutions are ready for transition.
  • Lead AI innovation by developing strategic prototypes in LLMs/GenAI, Computer Vision, NLP, and geospatial intelligence using expert-level Python and HuggingFace ecosystem.
  • Present AI capabilities to military leadership, government officials, and customers at international Defence exhibitions and customer sites.
  • Collaborate with product teams, architects, and developers to transition innovations from Product Lab prototypes to production implementation.
  • Participate in research steering groups, stay current with AI developments, and enhance our company reputation as Defence AI innovation leader.

Joining the team

Unique to this role, you will be part of Defence Product Lab with close link to SitaWare Insight. Leveraging advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies, SitaWare Insight automates the processing and analysis of complex, multi-source data. This empowers military commanders to rapidly detect patterns, identify emerging threats, and anticipate operational trends, thereby improving situational awareness and operational tempo.

Defence Product Lab is the innovation hub for our Defence software suite, rapidly prototyping AI/ML capabilities and key UX concepts across multiple programs. Product Lab is operating in tight partnership with product management, and the lab validates technical feasibility and customer value before inclusion in the product.

Your qualifications

We need someone who sees ambiguity as opportunity rather than obstacle. The ideal candidate is naturally curious and energized by open-ended challenges where the path forward is not immediately clear. You are the type of person who can look at a fuzzy business problem and instinctively start sketching out potential approaches, prototypes, and experiments.

We are looking for someone willing to champion unconventional approaches, experiment with emerging techniques, and occasionally fail fast in service of finding breakthrough solutions. Someone adaptable and comfortable in context-switching. At the same time, you have the pragmatism to know when to pivot and the communication skills to translate technical possibilities into business value.

We are looking for an experienced Data Scientist with a theoretical foundation from a Master’s degree, or maybe even a PhD, in computer science, statistics, data science or similar, and some years of experience working as a Data Scientist.

We do expect the successful candidate to have:

  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and implementing machine learning models,
  • Programming skills in languages, tools and frameworks commonly used in data science,
  • Experience in Data Preprocessing and Feature Engineering,
  • Computer science skills to support the overall development of the data science service,
  • A strong command in spoken and written English.

Please note that you must be able to present a clean criminal record and have lived in a NATO and/or an EU country for the past seven years as we work with security-classified projects. Read more here.
