Your team
You will be part of the Development Management team in Aarhus, which consists of the Head of Battlefield Product Development, two project managers, one test manager, three product owners, and yourself as software architect. You will work closely with three distributed Scrum development teams in Aarhus and Bucharest, each with seven to ten people: developers, testers, domain advisors, and project managers. stakeholders include the Chief and Lead Engineers, who play an integral part in the development effort across teams. In the Market Unit, your main stakeholders are the Solution Architect, who sets the architectural direction for the product, the Product Manager, and the Lead UX Designer.
The job
As our Software Architect for Battlefield Health, you will be responsible for creating and evolving the architectural implementation, bringing clarity to how it is executed across all products within the programme. You will ensure technical quality, consistency, and harmony across multiple development teams while managing the technical backlog and driving architectural improvements. You will serve as the software architecture authority for the programme, bridging the gap between strategic architectural vision and practical implementation, and ensuring our solutions are built on the right technical foundation to support critical healthcare operations in deployed environments. You will do this in close collaboration with the Solution Architect and Chief Engineer.
Some of the tasks you will encounter in the architect role:
- Identify, prioritise, and implement architectural improvements at programme level in collaboration with the Solution Architect to support the product roadmap
- Maintain architectural consistency and harmony across all three development teams
- Ensure alignment between product architectures and the overall programme architecture, specifically in how it is implemented
- Communicate the "how" in architectural design decisions in close collaboration with the Solution Architect, Chief Engineer, and development teams
- Manage, prioritise, and communicate the technical backlog across the Battlefield Health programme, and support project managers and product owners
Your profile
We expect you to hold a master's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. In addition, you have three to five years of experience working across multiple teams or products, along with experience architecting, designing, and developing distributed systems and systems operating in DDIL environments (denied, degraded, intermittent, and low-bandwidth conditions). Knowledge of the healthcare and/or defence domain, and experience with medical or mission-critical systems, is an advantage.
On the technical side, you have experience with:
- Java
- React or Angular
- Git and CI/CD pipelines
- Architectural patterns and design principles
- Non-functional requirements (security, performance, scalability)
- Code quality tools and practices
The following would also be advantageous:
- HL7/FHIR
- SQL
- NATO standards
- Healthcare IT systems
- Cloud technologies
Fluent English is required, both written and spoken.
As a person, you can create a long-term architectural vision while making pragmatic decisions for current delivery. You are a strong communicator, able to explain complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. You influence without authority and build consensus across teams, and you enjoy helping others learn and grow their technical skills.
You take a stand on technical decisions, are persistent, and follow through. Your standards for both code quality and architectural integrity are high. Above all, you care about building software that genuinely improves healthcare and defence workflows in critical situations to save lives.
Please note that you must be able to present a clean criminal record and have lived in a NATO and/or an EU country for the past seven years as we work with security-classified projects. Read more here.
